I was in the studio this past week, working on a demo of a new song. It’s been quite a while since my last studio sessions. Believe me when I tell you I was more than a little rusty.

After fumbling through a few takes, I started getting my studio-legs. The guitar passes smoothed out. The vocal runs were on-pitch. Once those cornerstones were in place, the fun began.

I heard piano fills, so I played them. An atmospheric “drone” was tried beneath the other instruments. It added to the track (versus taking from) so I kept it. When all was said and done, I had a simple, cool demo. I’ll share some time soon.

It felt good to get back in the studio. I plan to schedule some more time and get a few more demos done. I’m not sure to what end, but recording these songs feels like the right thing to do.

I can’t tell you how much that work triggers my creativity. I also can’t tell you how good it is for my head, for my heart. With absolutely no consideration as to the practicality or functionality of studio time, I’m listening to my very soul and allowing it to sing. In short, I’m trying to honor my own spirit.

My studio-legs have a bit of adjustment to go. I’ll hang in there, if for no other reason than to make joyful noise. The world is waiting…
