I am old-school. (No surprise there.) While my friends load their phones’ calendars with the details of their lives, I hand-write appointments and commitments in my old Day Runner. When a new year rolls around and it’s time to insert a fresh calendar onto the binder rings, I copy various dates and occasions from the previous year to the new calendar. It may be old fashioned, but it works for me and of all my friends, I’m one of the most-organized. I’m just sayin’.

Anyhoo – because a lot of what’s written on my calendar’s pages was transferred back in late December (or early January), when a particular date’s occasion rolls around, I’m pleasantly surprised. For instance, over the next couple of days there will be a few anniversaries of friends’ marriages. As I attended those weddings and the couples are still going strong, I write the dates in my calendar. I don’t contact the friends or anything, as anniversaries are – to me – personal (unless we’re talking a significant number of years, and then I’ll reach out with kudos). But it’s nice to remember weddings and to think fond thoughts about the couples we know. Hell – it’s nice to think fond thoughts period.

I know paper calendars are passé these days, and I know I’m downright ancient for tracking down the calendars I like each year. That task hasn’t gotten easier, friends, and yet I have no intention of letting go of my calendar rituals. I enjoy keeping up with life through my Day Runner. And I enjoy being reminded of friends, some of whom I rarely see. And today I’m enjoying memories of Palm Springs, 12 years ago, as a group of gorgeous women and men walked to a beautiful wedding in the desert, while a motorcycle rally revved and vroomed in the distance. Ah! Sweet Life!
