“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today is a holiday in America: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

I love holidays. And I really love holidays that remind me of great figures in history. Great thinkers, orators. At this time of year, when Dr. King’s quotes are all around, it’s lovely to think of his ideals and their beauty.

I once read something that encouraged seeing those around us not as people, but as souls. When I remember to look at the world that way, when I remember to see people as souls dressed in bodies, I tend to be happier, kinder, more forgiving. No matter how different some of us may see one another, we are actually all very much the same. We are just souls, trying to make it in this world. Think about it.

Personally, I could do a lot toward being less judgmental and more loving in this life.

What can I say? I’m trying. And I pray that counts.
