On Tuesday – the last day of June – as I was cleaning the floor, I caught myself singing Louis Armstrong’s “Cool Yule.” I stopped for a moment, then laughed. Usually I wait until July to dig into the holiday songs. Oh well.

I don’t understand enough about annual rhythms to make sense of why I go through this “Christmas in July” thing, year after year. I’m sure it’s been studied, explained and studied again by folks who have a friggin’ clue about such subjects. When I’ve dug around, trying to gain a little knowledge on the topic, I’ve come away more confused than when I started. Circadian rhythms, episodic memory, implicit memory, seasonal rhythms – yarg!

So for now, I’m gonna just accept my mid-year tendency toward holiday tunes. I don’t have anything to complain about really. If I’m going to hear voices singing in my head, I could do a lot worse than Louis Armstrong. Word.
