“Look up at the rooftops

when you’re walking ’round.

Don’t think for a moment

of looking down.”

Madness

(written by Suggs and Chas Smash)

I made a post office run Saturday morning and very nearly missed out on a bit of beauty. With to-do list in hand, I was so focused on ticking off items, I barely looked up. And then I did…

This was painted just before WWII and was, I believe, a WPA project. (If you don’t remember that one from your schoolin’, look it up, yo!) It’s positioned rather high and spans the full width of the wall. It has a companion painting at the other end of the post office. The whole building was built during that time and it’s gorgeous. I love this post office so much, I go out of my way to take care of my bid-ness there.

This is one of the many hand-crafted, original tiles lining the walls…

This bit of found art reminded me to open my eyes and actually see. Yes, I can be in a hurry. Yes, there will always be a list of things to do. But Ferris Bueller was right when he advised us to look around, lest we miss out on life. I don’t mind paraphrasing his youthful wisdom, as long as it leads me to found joys. To found comfort. To found art.
