It’s that time of year. Here in Southern California, we get devil winds, known as Santa Anas. They blow hard, and they blow hot.

Any other time of the year, I welcome wind. It cools things down and clears the air a bit. But Santa Anas? Not even a little.

The air seems dirtier during the Santa Anas. The days (and nights) are hotter. There’s nothing to be done, but ride out the winds and wait for June Gloom.

I don’t live in a fire zone. And though one of the fires is just down the road, I’m in no danger whatsoever. But I do know someone who’s probably been evacuated, due to destructive, unrelenting fires in his area. I have no idea if his home is safe or not. I don’t even know if he and his family are okay. And friends, there’s just nothing clever or witty to say in the face of that. All most of us can do is pray.

So we do. We pray for our friends and for strangers. We pray for those battling these blazes. We pray for June Gloom. It can’t get here soon enough.
