I’ve wanted to go for years. I’ve tried. Really. But timing has never worked. Until last night.

Tuba Christmas is this crazy concert where the stage is filled with a variety of tuba players. And only tuba players. The ages range from young to old and the experience levels vary greatly as well. The only requirement is that one play a tuba. Hence the name. And get this: it’s free! For attendees, that is. If you want to be a tuba performer, you gots to pay the man.

After visiting the Los Angeles Tuba Christmas website, I can tell you this shindig first began 37 years ago in New York. Today the event takes place globally, in over 200 cities! (You can click here to see upcoming concerts – maybe in your area!)

I didn’t quite know what to expect. The music itself didn’t come as too much of a shock, and while it was odd to hear familiar songs (Jingle Bell Rock, Away in a Manger, Joy to the World) performed with limited instrumentation, the effect was pretty cool. And that alone made me happy I saw the show.

A few songs were played by professional tuba musicians, and those numbers were notably, um, smoother. Lovely, even. The rest of the night’s performance was jolly, and it was nice to see so many folks out in their holiday attire. It was festive, you know?

So I checked Tuba Christmas off my list. Never say never, but I probably won’t be setting aside future dates for Tuba Christmas. But I tell ya – I’m mighty glad it’s out there in the world. I’m glad someone had the inclination to get the ball rolling in the first place. And I sincerely hope others will make their way to future Tuba Christmas shows. It’s unique. It’s cheery. It’s live music. Joy to the world, indeed.
