Today I posted 300 letters I’ve written to fellow citizens, asking them to vote. I didn’t engage politically, I just asked that they join me in exercising our civic duty and privilege. I explained that I vote with Love – for my country, for its people, for the world. Hmm. I guess when I think about it, voting with Love is political. It’s a shame we’ve come to that, isn’t it?

Writing these letters has provided me with more than I ever expected. Here I thought I was volunteering to do something for the world, when I actually received a great deal out of the act. I got to feel useful. I got to focus on the task and ended up experiencing something of a meditative quality. And I must say – writing those letters brought me tremendous peace. I had no idea I would be getting so much out of it. And I’m so very grateful I did.

As for the number of letters I wrote, I thought I was riding a high horse when I tallied my missives. But then I heard about volunteers who wrote thousands (thousands!) of letters. Turns out my high horse was more of a Shetland pony.

When I went out to post the letters, I saw a woman depositing a box of mail pieces and realized she was involved with the same volunteer group as I. Seeing her warmed my heart. Then it occurred to me that I had been likely to cross paths with another letter-writing volunteer. After all – our collective efforts led to over 15 million letters being mailed today. Hope the post office can keep up.

And I hope that at least a few people I wrote to will indeed vote this year. It’s time for Love to take the reins. Yes.
