I’ve been getting up before daylight lately, and there are a few things I really like about it.

It’s quiet. And I do mean quiet. Not a single trash truck or airplane passes. Traffic is all but nonexistent. I don’t turn on the telly or the radio, so there’s no sound from those. All in all, the only things I hear are the coffee percolating and the thoughts in my head. The coffee sounds are only temporary. And fortunately, those mind voices don’t get revved and going until later in the morning.

It’s dark. As in D-A-R-K. I don’t know why this surprises me so, as the song has been telling us for years, “The darkest hour is just before dawn.” And the song didn’t lie.

The sky is spectacular. Sunsets in Los Angeles are well-known for their beauty. (Thank you, Dirty Air!) But I didn’t know the sunrises were equally as beautiful. Only by accident have I discovered this, and now I look to the east every morning, just in case. Sometimes I’m so taken aback I have to swear out loud. And sometimes I’m unable to say anything at all.

Given my druthers, I’d probably choose to be a night owl who sleeps in late. But that isn’t the way the cookie’s crumbling right now. And since I don’t see my schedule changing any time soon, this is how it’s gonna be. So I’m grateful to have so much to appreciate about early mornings. And honestly – how can anyone not love that sky?
