Yesterday I put on the newest CD in our collection: Joey Alexander’s “My Favorite Things.” This jazz disc is not only fabulous to listen to, it’s also incredible to think the artist at the piano is 12 years old and self-taught.

I am astounded by this kid’s playing. Yes – his interpretations are top-notch. And yes – his original composition is aces. But what gets me the most is something you might not expect – his ability to embrace silence. Think about it. Inexperienced (and sometimes seasoned) players, performers, singers, painters, dancers, whatever – all want to fill every available bit of space. (Age doesn’t seem to be a factor on this one, as I’ve met new songwriters – older than me – who can’t let a little space alone. They have to fill it with singing.) But what young Master Alexander is doing is so sophisticated, so mature. His use of pauses blows my mind.

I don’t know how this sort of thing happens, and I guess I don’t have to understand it to appreciate it. So I’ll just enjoy Joey Alexander’s work while looking forward to whatever he does next. I am in awe.
