24 x 48, Oil on Linen, 2012

People laughed. When I belly-plopped myself down, there on the side of the water feature, onlookers guffawed. Some gawked. They wondered why in the world a gal would lie on the ground just to take a photo.

But I knew why. I knew I needed the ground-level perspective to get what would eventually become the painting above, Denver Botanica.

There are things I adore about this painting: the sculpture, the water lilies, the clouds. It calms me, which wasn’t something I was aiming for. It just happened, and that’s a beautiful thing.

So the next time you spot a gal with a camera, belly-down on the ground, taking photos – don’t judge. She may know exactly what she’s doing. I’m just saying.
